VE Day Celebrations

8th May 2025

Towns across the UK are invited to come together on the 8th May to celebrate the 80th anniversary of VE Day. Ongar Town Council are pleased to announce the following to which all residents are welcome to attend.

9am – The VE Day flag will be raised in Pleasance car park (adj. Ongar Library)

9:30pm – VE Day 80th anniversary celebration at the Ongar War Memorial (Ongar Health Centre).  At 9:30pm a lantern of peace will be lit accompanied by readings. This will happen at the same time in every location to honour the date.

Did you know?. People are encouraged to eat fish and chips on this day because fish and chips were one of the few things that weren’t rationed during WW2 to keep the factories working and to keep up morale during extremely worrying times. The availability of fish and chips, even during a time of scarcity, became a symbol of British resilience and a reminder of simpler times.
